Sheikh Hamdan stressed the importance of implementing plans to achieve the desired results, which will further position Abu Dhabi, and the UAE as a country at the forefront of environmental sustainability.

Sheikh Hamdan praised the agencies environmental sustainability efforts, which are aligned with the government’s strategy. The activities also reinforce the sustainable development and prosperity in Abu

Dr. Shaikha Al Dhaheri indicated that the EAD has worked with its strategic partners to realise this vision and achieve the goals of the Environmental Centennial 2071 through flexible planning cycles that take into account future changes. ‘We have developed the first round of the Abu Dhabi Environmental Plan towards the Centennial, which extends until 2025, to implement our centennial pathways. The plan includes 65 implementa

She added: ‘These three strategic pathways aim to preserve Abu Dhabi’s unique natural gifts of biological diversity, clean air, water and soil that support various forms of life, and set proactive vision of addressing climate change in line with the UAE ambitious vision to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. This will be done by adopting sustainable development solutions, accelerating the adoption of green policies, increased environmental educational and awareness innovative initiatives, and advancing in environmentally-friendly science and technology. With this plan, we are emphasising the importance of working jointly to build a future that celebrates the beauty of our planet and the rich environmental heritage of our emirate.’

Efforts will continue to recover damaged marine environments, such as coral reefs and seaweed. Through the use of advanced technology systems, planting mangroves and the monitoring and controlling of marine organisms will be expanded. This pathway also includes supporting environmentally-friendly tourism, via development of Abu Dhabi’s sustainable tourism strategy, and green tourism experiences that enable visitors to explore the natural world through innovative ways.

To ensure a healthy future and cleaner air, there will be a shift to micromobility through the adoption of policies, plans and infrastructure that support light sustainable means of transportation. The capabilities of air quality modeling will be further de

This pathway aims to achieve excellence in climate action through Abu Dhabi’s Climate Change Strategy, which was launched recently. It aims to achieve climate leadership by reducing emissions from key sectors, improving resi
lience to expected impacts, while maintaining investment attractiveness, and the creation of a low-carbon economy that promotes innovation.

To preserve our unique natural environments, plans will be developed that ensure biodiversity adapts to climate change.

To transform into a global centre for clean and renewable energy, efforts will be undertaken to achieve leadership in green hydrogen, develop a low-emission vehicle strategy, and integrate environmental sustainability into the Abu Dhabi autonomous transportation strategy. To achieve a green economy that drives development, green government procurement will be encouraged, and air purification towers will be installed at various locations – acting as icons of sustainable architecture in the emirate and the w
orld. Sustainable buildings will also be enhanced with updated requirements, the circular economy framework will be adopted in manufacturing industries, and a comprehensive strategy will be drafted to reduce food loss and waste as part of efforts to achieve a circular economy in the emirate.

In the third pathway, ‘Enablers for future environmental leadership,’ five government agencies will participate in implementing 23 implementation programmes that focus on enhancing Abu Dhabi’s environmental leadership. Education, training, and scholarship schemes for government employees will be launched to inspire environmental action, and everyone will have the opportunity to join the green e-learning platform, which provides rich environmental knowledge.

Sheikh Humaid said, ‘We are proud of our wise leadership, which continues to fulfil their aspirations, harness all capabilitie
s to serve them and make them happy, consolidate extended social relations among everyone, enhance all meanings of brotherhood bonds, communication and harmony, and strive to fulfil the legacy of the founding leaders, and follow their approach in devoting the rooted value of compassion in the UAE land.”

The Ruler of Ajman stressed that the majlises are a school for humanity and an opportunity to raise generations. Al Barza majlis embodies the ancient Emirati heritage and reflects images of communication, solidarity and social support among people, in which children learn authentic customs and traditions, gain experience in facing life’s challenges, and reinforce the values of loyalty and belonging to the homeland.

Sheikh Humaid added that Ajman extends thanks and appreciation to all those who continued to work silently in all locations and in various specialisations to contribute to its renaissance and were an essential element in its progress and prosperity.

Ajman Ruler and Crown Prince exchanged cordial
talks with the audience regarding a number of issues related to the interest of Emiratis and the homeland.

Sheikh Ammar said that meeting the people of Ajman at the Ajman Museum – the architectural masterpiece that was inaugurated by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan – represents part of the history of this emirate and the legacy of the founding fathers that mirrors the cultural and humanitarian communication, which was the focus of Sheikh Humaid.

Emirates Mars Mission publishes observations across full Martian year

DUBAI: The Emirates Mars Mission (EMM), the first interplanetary exploration undertaken by an Arab nation, today released a series of unique new observations drawn from the first measurements of Mars’ atmosphere across a full Martian year (two full Earth years).

The release celebrates the third year of science data gathering around Mars by the Hope probe and marks the accomplishment of the Mission’s stated science objectives.

Salem Butti Al Qubaisi, Director-General of the UAE Space Agency, said, ‘The Emirates Mars Mission was conceived to provide a national challenge that would accelerate the development not only of the UAE’s engineering capabilities, but to disrupt our education, research and innovation ecosystems. There is no doubt at all that it has succeeded in that beyond our wildest expectations. At the outset, the UAE’s leadership made it clear that EMM should make a significant scientific contribution, and we can now say that the mission not only fulfilled its original science objectives, but has s
ignificantly surpassed them.’

EMM was designed to achieve three objectives that complemented questions posed by the global grouping of Mars scientists and researchers, MEPAG – the Mars Exploration Programme Analysis Group. Hope set out to monitor the global, diurnal, and seasonal changes that the Martian atmosphere undergoes due to year-to-year variations including those caused by solar forcing that result in atmospheric escape – particularly of Hydrogen and Oxygen and the temporal and spatial behaviour of Mars’ atmosphere.

Hoor Al Mazmi, EMM Project Manager, commented, ‘We can say with confidence that EMM has blown past its original stated science objectives. Not only have we achieved our goals, and taken Hope into an extended mission, but we have added unique new discoveries, from investigations of new types of aurora through to the most extensive new observations of Mars’ least known moon, Deimos.’

‘Hope’s unique elliptical orbit supports these unique observations, giving us a near-complete picture of t
he planet’s atmospheric dynamics every nine days. That has enabled us to create an incredible depiction of Mars’ changing atmosphere day and night, across the seasons and throughout a full Martian year.’ Said Mohsen Al Awadhi, Director of Space Missions Department at UAE Space Agency, ‘With the probe performing optimally, we performed a manoeuvre to support a season of Deimos observations and I can say today that we still have the option, from an engineering point of view, of further extending the mission.’

A series of visuals shared by the Emirates Mars Mission’s Science Team to celebrate the third anniversary include an animation of the Oxygen emission changing over more than one Martian year captured by its Emirates Mars Ultraviolet Spectrometer, EMUS. Acquired when the spacecraft passed over local times around 09:00 and 15:00, these images of atomic oxygen emission at a wavelength of 130.4 nm revealed the vigorous dynamics of the upper atmosphere of Mars, which is slowly escaping into space. The EMUS vid
eos showed the variability of oxygen across the Martian year as the planet moves closer and further away from the sun. These global views of the oxygen emission have never been seen before this mission.

In addition to the EMUS animation, the EMM science team shared Emirates Mars Ultraviolet Spectrometer (EMIRS) images showing daily global maps that the instrument gets of dust and ice over a full Martian year, enabling analysis and better understanding of the daily variation of these constituents.

Finally, the science team has revealed Emirates Mars Ultraviolet Spectrometer (EXI) images that show how the planet changes visually using a sequence of 12 images taken across an entire Martian year exhibiting the impacts of seasonal change on the planet.

The Hope Probe carries three instruments:

EXI – The Emirates Exploration Imager is a digital camera that captures high resolution images of Mars along with measuring water ice in the lower atmosphere through the UV bands.

EMIRS – The Emirates Mars InfraRed Spec
trometer measures global distribution of dust, ice, and water vapour in the Martian lower atmosphere.

EMUS – The Emirates Mars Ultraviolet Spectrometer measures oxygen and carbon monoxide in the thermosphere and the variability of hydrogen and oxygen in the exosphere.

EMM and the Hope probe are the culmination of a knowledge transfer and development effort started in 2006, which has seen Emirati engineers working with partners around the world to develop the UAE’s spacecraft design, engineering, and space science capabilities. Hope is a spacecraft that carries three instruments to study Mars’ atmosphere. Weighing some 1,350 kg, and approximately the size of a small SUV, the spacecraft was designed and developed by MBRSC engineers working with knowledge transfer partners, including LASP at the University of Colorado, Boulder; Arizona State University, and the University of California, Berkeley.
