UN’s Guterres calls for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who is on a visit to Al Arish, has called for reaching an immediate ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

Guterres made the remarks following his arrival at Al Arish International Airport, where he was received by North Sinai Governor Mohamed Abdel Fadil Shosha, to visit wounded Palestinians receiving treatment in Al Arish General Hospital, checking the aid convoys at Rafah Border Crossing, and meeting with humanitarian workers on the Egyptian side.

He underscored the necessity that Israel should allow the entry of aid trucks stacked up near Egypt’s border into the besieged war-ravaged enclave.

Guterres also lauded Egypt’s efforts on receiving wounded Palestinians and delivering humanitarian aid into the strip.

Guterres flew from Cairo, accompanied by Health and Population Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, head of the Egyptian Red Crescent Society in North Sinai Khaled Zayed, and a great host senior security officials and executives.

Welcoming the UN chief on his seco
nd visit to the governorate since the outbreak of Gaza war, Shosha gave an overview of Egypt’s efforts to deliver humanitarian aid into Gaza and put and an end to Israel’s aggression on the strip, in cooperation with sisterly Arab nations.

He said some 7,000 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid are waiting in North Sinai, but that inspection procedures demanded by the occupation authorities held up the flow of relief.

Egyptian, Emirati military aircraft conduct airdrops of aid to inaccessible areas in Gaza

Egyptian and Emirati aircraft carried out airdrops of humanitarian aid to hard-to-reach regions in the Gaza Strip on Friday and Saturday, Egypt’s Armed Forces’ Spokesman Gharib Abdel Hafez announced.

He added that the Egyptian Air Forces have intensified their efforts in collaboration with Jordan and other countries as part of their global alliance to airdrop large quantities of aid in northern Gaza during Ramadan.

In March, Egypt declared its participation in the global alliance, which includes Jordan, the United States, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium, to provide airdropped aid to Gaza.

The first humanitarian aid airdrop by Egypt took place on Tuesday, February 27, in coordination with Jordan, the UAE, Qatar, and France.

The operations target different areas in northern Gaza that are challenging to access through ground means.

Cairo has consistently emphasized that the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza remains open to facilitate the delivery of aid.

However, Egyptian officials have rep
eatedly accused Israel of obstructing aid deliveries through the Rafah and Kerem Abu Salem crossings.

During a ministerial meeting in Cairo on Thursday, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates jointly called for the opening of all border crossings between Israel and the Gaza Strip to enable the delivery of humanitarian assistance.

The need for aid in Gaza has grown increasingly urgent, with the United Nations estimating that at least a quarter of the strip’s population is on the brink of famine.

Guterres praises Egypt’s role in backing Palestinians

Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres praised Saturday 23/03/2024 role of Egyptian state and people in backing the Palestinians.

Guterres, during a press conference held in front of Rafah crossing, said he went to the crossing in the month of Ramadan to share the suffering of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

He met the injured Palestinian civilians and their families in el-Arish Hospital and was touched by their stories and experiences.

There is neither justification for the Hamas attacks on October 7, nor for the collective punishment of the Palestinian people by Israel, he said, adding that now is the appropriate time to establish a humanitarian ceasefire.

Guterres said children, women and adults inside the Gaza Strip are stuck in a never-ending nightmare.

Homes are destroyed, families and entire generations are eliminated, and famine besieges entire people, said Guterres, noting the necessity of exploiting the month of Ramadan because it is a time to spread human values and promo
te peace.

He pointed out that the Palestinians have been witnessing continuous suffering for several months in the Gaza Strip, and that they are spending the month of Ramadan under continuous bombardment by the Israeli army, in addition to the fact that humanitarian aid is still suspended.
