Egypt Welcomes UN Security Council’s Resolution for Ceasefire in Gaza

Egypt has expressed its approval in a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 25, regarding the adoption of a resolution by the United Nations Security Council calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during Ramadan. This marks the first instance of such a resolution since the onset of the crisis, following the Security Council’s repeated inability to reach a decision on a permanent ceasefire.

Egypt regards the issuance of this resolution, coming after more than five months of Israeli military operations that inflicted significant damage on civilians in Gaza, as an essential and initial step. Despite the resolution’s limited timeframe and the imbalances in its commitments, Egypt sees it as a critical move towards halting bloodshed and preventing further civilian casualties among Palestinians, while also facilitating the entry of humanitarian aid.

The statement emphasized Egypt’s call for the immediate implementation of the ceasefire. This action is viewed as crucial for addressing al
l aspects of the crisis comprehensively. Egypt reaffirmed its commitment to continue its vigorous efforts with international and regional parties to swiftly resolve the Gaza sector crisis.

Geomagnetic Storm from Solar Flare Could Disrupt Radio Communications and Create Striking Aurora

Space weather forecasters have issued a geomagnetic storm watch through today, saying an ouburst of plasma from a solar flare could interfere with radio transmissions on Earth. It could also make for great aurora viewing.

There’s no reason for the public to be concerned, according to the alert issued Saturday by NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado.

The storm could interrupt high-frequency radio transmissions, such as by aircraft trying to communicate with distant traffic control towers. Most commercial aircraft can use satellite transmission as backup, said Jonathan Lash, a forecaster at the center.

Satellite operators might have trouble tracking their spacecraft, and power grids could also see some ‘induced current’ in their lines, though nothing they can’t handle, he said.

‘For the general public, if you have clear skies at night and you are at higher latitudes, this would be a great opportunity to see the skies light up,’ Lash said.

Every 11 years, the sun’s magnetic field flip
s, meaning its north and south poles switch positions. Solar activity changes during that cycle, and it’s now near its most active, called the solar maximum.

During such times, geomagnetic storms of the type that arrived Sunday can hit Earth a few times a year, Lash said. During solar minimum, a few years may pass between storms.

In December, the biggest solar flare in years disrupted radio communications.

UN Security Council to vote on a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza

NEW YORK: The United Nations Security Council is set to vote today on a drafted resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire the Gaza Strip.

The resolution, prepared by several non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, will be voted on this evening.

Last Friday, Russia and China used their veto on a US-drafted resolution in the UN Security Council regarding Gaza, which did not include any direct call for a ceasefire, but rather indicated its support for the ongoing international efforts to secure a ceasefire.

Since the start of the Israeli onslaught on Gaza last October 7th, Washington has used its veto power against three draft resolutions, two of which called for an immediate ceasefire.

The resolution requires approval by at least nine votes and no veto from any of the five permanent member states – the United States, France, Britain, Russia, and China.

The death toll in the Gaza Strip since October 7th has risen to around 32,226 reported fatalities, with 74,518 wounded, mostly children and wo
men.
