28th IRENA Council Convenes in Abu Dhabi Ahead of COP29

Abu dhabi: The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has commenced its 28th Council meeting in Abu Dhabi, marking the final assembly before the upcoming 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29). Over the course of two days, IRENA Members are slated to deliberate on pivotal issues concerning the energy transition, with a focus on advancing renewable energy capacity and enhancing energy efficiency by 2030, in line with the goals set forth in the Outcome of the First Global Stocktake. According to Emirates News Agency, a recent report by IRENA, titled "Delivering on the UAE Consensus: Tracking Progress Toward Tripling Renewable Energy Capacity and Doubling Energy Efficiency by 2030," highlights that current national plans are on track to achieve only half of the anticipated growth in renewable power by 2030. This shortfall poses a significant challenge to maintaining global temperature rise within the 1.5°C threshold. IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera emphasized the urgency of narrowing this gap, especially with COP29 approaching, as it offers a platform to advocate for increased ambition at Baku. Dr. Gloria Magombo, IRENA Council Chair and Secretary for Energy and Power Development of Zimbabwe, remarked on the critical disparity between the current global renewable energy transition trajectory and climate targets. She affirmed her commitment to fostering collaborative efforts within the Council to bolster the Agency's mission in accelerating progress among its members. The 28th IRENA Council will also explore national experiences in the energy transition, address challenges and opportunities for financial mobilization towards renewables, and discuss innovative technologies and partnerships crucial for transforming the energy landscape of small island economies. Additionally, the meetings will evaluate the implementation of the Agency's work programme and budget.
