CAIRO: The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, affirmed that Egypt's role in defending Palestinian rights is clear and that attempts by Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of the occupying state, to launch accusations against it is nothing more than a smokescreen aimed at concealing its desire to prolong the war for political and personal scores. In a press statement on Wednesday, Aboul Gheit said the Israeli arguments have become obvious and that Netanyahu does not want to reach a ceasefire agreement; a fact that his people have become aware of. He affirmed Egypt's clear position, which is supported by Arab countries, rejecting the presence of Israeli forces in the Philadelphi Corridor. He stressed that the recent positions of Israel, especially the lies spread by Netanyahu, are risking the loss of Egypt's pivotal role in the region. He also called on all international parties to exert pressure on Israel to reach a ceasefire agreement as soon as possible to save lives and avert th e threat of dangerous regional escalation.
