CAIRO: Egypt strongly condemned the Israeli occupation’s recent confiscation of land in East Jerusalem, which is owned by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), to build an illegal settlement.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday criticizing the Israeli action, which involves the appropriation of land in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, where plans to construct a settlement of 1,440 units have been announced. The Foreign Ministry described these actions as a “renewed violation” against UNRWA, emphasizing the agency’s critical role in supporting Palestinian refugees. The statement also accused Israel of attempting to tarnish the reputation of the UN agency, a move Egypt regards as contrary to international laws and norms.
The Ministry’s release further called upon the United Nations Security Council to take immediate action to hold the Israeli authorities accountable and to cease the ongoing offenses against UNRWA. This
development marks a significant escalation in tensions in East Jerusalem, an area that has long been a flashpoint in Israeli-Palestinian relations.
