China Unveils World’s Most Powerful Floating Offshore Wind Turbine in Yancheng

Yancheng: The world's most powerful floating offshore wind turbine, boasting a generating capacity of 20 megawatts, has been unveiled in Yancheng city, Jiangsu Province, China. This marks a significant milestone in the country's renewable energy capabilities. According to Emirates News Agency, the turbine was developed by the CRRC Corporation Limited, a leader in China's train manufacturing sector, and represents a pinnacle in China's independent technological advancements in renewable energy. The turbine features a monumental wind wheel with a diameter of 260 meters and a swept area of 53,100 square meters, equivalent to the combined size of seven standard soccer fields. This colossal structure is capable of generating 62 million kWh of electricity annually, which is sufficient to supply approximately 37,000 households. This production capacity is expected to save 25,000 tonnes of coal annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 62,000 tonnes, thereby contributing significantly to China's environmental sustainability efforts. The turbine's design includes a semi-submersible floating platform and a mooring system that utilizes advanced smart control and sensing technologies. These features enable it to operate in deeper waters where traditional turbines might not be viable, thus enhancing the potential geographical reach of wind power installations. Wang Dian, deputy general manager of CRRC Qi Hang New Energy Technology Co., Ltd, emphasized the importance of this technology in an interview with Xinhua News Agency. "Floating offshore wind turbines are a key technological trend shaping the future of wind energy development," Wang stated. He highlighted the turbine's adaptability, noting that it offers customizable options suitable for various water depths, which optimizes the exploitation of deep-sea wind power resources. The launch of this turbine is part of a broader push by China to expand its renewable energy sector. In 2023, China achieved a remarkable milestone when its renewable energy capacity excee ded that of thermal power for the first time, accounting for more than half of the country's total installed power generation capacity.
