Sultan of Oman Enacts New Wildlife Trade Regulation Law

MUSCAT: His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has officially enacted Royal Decree No. (45/2024), which introduces a comprehensive Law on Regulating Trade in Wildlife, following its presentation to the Council of Oman. According to Oman News Agency, the new law, outlined in the decree, includes several critical articles aimed at regulating wildlife trade more effectively. Article (1) of the decree specifies that the provisions of the new law are to be enforced immediately. Article (2) delegates the Chairman of the Environment Authority the responsibility to issue Executive Regulations and necessary measures to implement the law's provisions. Until these are established, existing regulations and decisions will remain effective, ensuring no gap in governance. Article (3) requires that those affected by this law must adjust their status to comply with its stipulations within six months from the date of its enforcement. Article (4) annuls any prior enactments that contradict or contravene the provisions of the ne w law. Finally, Article (5) ensures the decree's publication in the Official Gazette and stipulates that the law will come into effect the day after its publication. This legislative move marks a significant step in Oman's environmental regulatory framework, reflecting a growing awareness and commitment to sustainable wildlife trade practices.
