Amman: Azerbaijan is set to host the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP29, from November 11 to 22 in its capital city, Baku. The event is part of the country's broader commitment to environmental sustainability and green growth. According to Jordan News Agency, Azerbaijani Ambassador in Amman Eldar Salimov outlined the nation's environmental initiatives and goals in a recent statement. He highlighted that Azerbaijan had declared 2024 as the "Year of Solidarity for a Green World," a decree issued by President Ilham Aliyev, underscoring its dedication to being a "country of clean environment and green growth." Salimov emphasized that this declaration is a significant move in reaffirming Azerbaijan's commitment to environmental sustainability. The ambassador pointed out that the decision to host COP29 in Baku is a "decisive" action aimed at enhancing global efforts to tackle climate change. The conference will gather parties to the United Nations Framework Convention, along with ex perts, journalists, climate activists, and representatives from various companies and civil society organizations. Salimov also mentioned that Azerbaijan is actively working on transitioning to a green economy and has integrated climate action into its national agenda. The country aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030 and 40% by 2050, relative to 1990 levels. These targets align with the commitments under the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Moreover, the ambassador asserted that despite its wealth in fossil fuels, Azerbaijan has established itself as a reliable energy partner and a responsible player in the global fight against climate change. He noted that the country's strategy includes numerous green growth and green energy projects intended to position Azerbaijan as a leader in regional green energy initiatives.
