Jerusalem: Jerusalem resident Yousef Atoun was compelled to demolish his own house on Tuesday following a final demolition order from the local municipality, marking a distressing culmination of a two-decade battle over building permits. According to Maan News Agency, Atoun had built his home 20 years ago and had since been attempting to secure a building permit, during which time he faced multiple postponements and freezes on demolition orders. The house, which measured 90 square meters, was inhabited by Atoun and his family of six. Atoun also highlighted that over the years, he was repeatedly fined for "unlicensed construction." Despite his efforts to pay the fines and legalize his home, his attempts were ultimately unsuccessful. The local municipality mandates that residents carry out demolition orders themselves. Failure to comply results in the municipality executing the demolition, with the costs and associated fees charged to the homeowner. This practice of forced or self-demolition places significa nt emotional and financial burdens on affected families, often leading to further complications and hardships.
