WHO Urges Israel to Cease Attacks on Lebanese Health Facilities Amid Rising Conflict

AMMAN: The World Health Organization has issued a call for Israel to halt its military actions targeting health facilities in Lebanon, highlighting the severe impact these attacks have on the country's healthcare infrastructure. According to Jordan News Agency, the WHO's urgent plea comes in response to the recent surge in air strikes across Lebanon, particularly in the southern regions, which has led to the closure of numerous health centers. "Of the 207 primary health care centers and clinics in areas affected by the bombing, 100 have been closed so far," WHO stated in a recent press release. This substantial number of closures represents almost half of the healthcare facilities in the bombed areas, severely disrupting medical services and access to healthcare for thousands of Lebanese citizens. The WHO emphasized the critical role these facilities play in the community, providing essential health services including immunizations, maternal and child health, and chronic disease management. The closure of t hese centers not only deprives people of basic health services but also elevates the risk of outbreaks and health crises amid the ongoing conflict. The international health body has urged all parties involved in the conflict to respect international humanitarian laws and conventions that protect health facilities and medical workers during times of war. The WHO's call to action seeks to prevent further deterioration of Lebanon's healthcare system, already strained by economic challenges and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
