LONDON: The United Kingdom has announced a new allocation of GBP 3 million (USD 3.887 million) in emergency humanitarian aid to support displaced individuals from Lebanon who have sought refuge in Syria. This funding aims to provide essential healthcare and life-saving assistance through reputable humanitarian organizations, according to a statement released by the British Foreign Office. According to Kuwait News Agency, British Minister of State for Development Anneliese Dodds emphasized the urgent need to address the humanitarian crisis affecting vulnerable civilians fleeing from Lebanon. "The humanitarian situation in Lebanon and the wider Middle East is extremely concerning," Dodds stated. "It is critical that vulnerable civilians fleeing the conflict in Lebanon are given safe passage, and for their lives to be protected." The emergency assistance package is intended to support those risking their lives to undertake the perilous journey to Syria. The British Foreign Office statement detailed the distrib ution of the GBP 3 million funding, with GBP 2 million (USD 2.590 million) allocated to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Syria, and GBP 500,000 each designated for the International Medical Corps UK and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The United Nations estimates that since last September, over 400,000 people, predominantly Syrian women and children, have fled from Lebanon to Syria. These individuals were initially displaced to Lebanon due to the Syrian civil war that began in 2014. The United Kingdom has been a significant contributor to Syrian humanitarian aid, having provided GBP 4 billion (USD 5.178 billion) in life-saving and life-sustaining assistance since the Syrian conflict erupted in 2011.
