Kuwait Emphasizes Peaceful Use of Radioactive Materials at UN Meeting

UNITED NATIONS: The State of Kuwait has reaffirmed its commitment to the peaceful utilization of radioactive materials, emphasizing their role in human development and environmental protection. This was articulated by Abdullah Al-Obaid, Diplomatic Attache at Kuwait's Mission to the UN, during a session of the Fourth Committee focused on the impacts of radiation. According to Kuwait News Agency, Al-Obaid highlighted the urgent need to address the destructive impacts of high radiation levels, advocating for solutions that protect both humanity and the environment. He underscored the importance of using radiation for the benefit of mankind, while also taking into account its long-term consequences. Al-Obaid appealed to member countries to support the committee's scientific mandate by providing comprehensive information related to radiation. In a significant development, Al-Obaid announced that a delegation from the Kuwait Cancer Center had reached an initial agreement to establish itself as a regional center f or cancer treatment. This initiative aligns with efforts by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to enhance cancer treatment capabilities in the region. Kuwait has been actively contributing to the IAEA's programs, including the development of laboratories, the peaceful use of nuclear power, and the creation of a nuclear fuel bank. Kuwait hosts three IAEA centers dedicated to medicine, marine environment, and radiation prevention, further demonstrating its commitment to radiation safety and scientific advancement. Al-Obaid also noted that Kuwait consistently submits national reports to the parties of the nuclear safety agreement and supports scientific research aimed at mitigating radiation effects on humans and the environment.
