ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Russia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday to bolster parliamentary cooperation, marking a significant step forward in diplomatic relations between the two nations. The signing ceremony took place at the Parliament House in Islamabad, with Chairman Senate Yousuf Raza Gilani and Valentina Matvienko, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, representing their respective countries. According to Kuwait News Agency, Matvienko addressed a special session of Pakistan's Upper House of Parliament, emphasizing Russia's respect for Pakistan's sovereignty, culture, and history. She underscored that the relationship is founded on mutual respect and benefits, stressing that there are no hierarchical partners in this alliance. Matvienko expressed Russia's eagerness to enhance cooperation in various sectors, including the economy, trade, and energy. She stated that Russia is prepared to increase supplies of mineral fertilizers, modern agric ultural machinery, and share technological advancements to boost Pakistan's agricultural output. The Russian Speaker highlighted the potential for both countries to learn from each other and explore new opportunities for friendship. She expressed confidence in the role that the parliaments of Pakistan and Russia will play in refining the legal framework for bilateral cooperation. Matvienko also noted Pakistan's strategic geographical location and its significant logistics and transit potential. She praised the alignment of both countries on numerous international issues and their continued support for the United Nations' central role in global relations. Matvienko welcomed Pakistan's election to the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member, reflecting its growing influence on the global stage. Chairman Gilani, in his welcoming remarks, described Matvienko's visit as a pivotal moment in strengthening the ties between Pakistan and Russia. He reiterated the two nations' shared commitment to regional stabi lity, peace, and prosperity, expressing hope that this visit will pave the way for future collaboration. The agreement promotes interaction between parliamentary friendship groups and includes a professional development program aimed at capacity-building and institutional development for effective parliamentary engagement. During her visit, Matvienko is also scheduled to meet Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari, Premier Shehbaz Sharif, and Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.
