Beirut: Children in Lebanon are returning to public schools as part of a significant initiative supported by UNICEF to aid approximately 387,000 children, including those affected by war and residing in shelters. This initiative, beginning today, is part of an emergency response plan in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) to reopen 326 public schools not used as shelters by internally displaced persons (IDPs). According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the response plan aims to provide essential educational support and help public schools resume operations amid ongoing challenges. The Lebanese Ministry of Education/UNICEF Transition Resilience Education Fund (TREF) will provide essential funding to these schools. This support includes necessary teaching materials like textbooks and vital psychosocial and health screenings to assist children in coping with the conflict's impacts. UNICEF Representative in Lebanon, Edouard Beigbeder, emphasized the urgent need to address the negative impact of the conflict on children, teachers, and schools. He highlighted the importance of resuming education to prevent a lost school year that could jeopardize children's well-being, future prospects, and the country's recovery. The initiative not only focuses on academic learning but also aims to provide social and emotional stability for children during these challenging times. The start of the new school year was originally scheduled for early October but was delayed due to the war. Resuming education in public schools remains challenging, as approximately 60 percent of shelters for displaced families are located in schools, forcing many teachers and students to relocate far from their usual schools. With the support of UNICEF, the 326 public schools will offer quality in-person and blended learning opportunities to help children and youth catch up and continue their educational journeys. MEHE's digital platform will also provide online learning options. Special interventions for children with disabilities, girls, and refugees will be integrated to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn. Beigbeder reiterated the importance of safeguarding school buildings and other civilian infrastructure to protect children and support their continued education. He called for an immediate and long-lasting ceasefire to allow children to return to their learning and lives.
