AUB Faculty of Health Sciences Hosts Critical Webinar on Lebanon’s Health Crisis.

Beirut: The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the American University of Beirut (AUB), in collaboration with several humanitarian organizations, held a webinar to address Lebanon's ongoing health and humanitarian crisis. The event, which took place on November 6, 2024, saw participation from key figures including Dr. Firass Abiad, Dr. Nasser Yassine, Dr. Zeina Mohanna, and Dr. Faysal El Kak. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the webinar focused on the severe impact of the crisis on Lebanon's healthcare system, particularly affecting women and children. The event aimed to present the humanitarian situation, analyze challenges in emergency response, and foster collaboration for an effective recovery. Dr. Fadi El-Jardali moderated the session, which was attended by 155 participants, and began with an introduction by Dr. Abla Mehio Sibai, Dean of FHS, AUB. The discussion highlighted the destruction, displacement, and loss of life caused by the current crisis. The healthcare system has been pushed t o its limits, with over one million people displaced, more than 3,000 lives lost, and over 13,000 injured. Dr. El-Jardali emphasized the collective responsibility to mobilize resources and bridge gaps in essential sectors, stating, "no one should be left behind." Dr. Abiad advocated for international protection of healthcare facilities and personnel, stressing the need for increased resources and better coordination. Dr. Mohanna shared the efforts of NGOs like Amel Association in providing comprehensive services, while Dr. EL-Kak noted support for survivors of gender-based violence and initiatives for women's health issues. Dr. Yassine highlighted the disparity between limited aid and unprecedented needs, urging effective coordination and transparency in aid distribution. He called for advocacy to end the ongoing conflict, emphasizing that nearly a quarter of the Lebanese population is now internally displaced. In conclusion, Dr. El-Jardali underscored the importance of current actions in laying the founda tion for Lebanon's recovery. Dean Sibai reflected on Lebanon's resilience in the face of ongoing challenges. The webinar concluded with key takeaways focusing on securing health services, strengthening the healthcare system, and advocating for global humanitarian support and a peaceful resolution.
