Beirut: The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Lebanon, Mr. Imran Riza, has welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire, describing it as a crucial moment of relief and hope for civilians who have endured over a year of severe hardship. "This key step toward restoring safety and security for people on both sides of the Blue Line must be followed by the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006)," Riza said, echoing recent calls by the UN Secretary-General and the Special Coordinator for Lebanon. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the prolonged conflict has left a devastating toll: over 3,800 lives lost, more than 15,800 injured, and widespread destruction of homes, healthcare facilities, livelihoods, and cultural heritage. Additionally, nearly 900,000 people have been displaced internally, with over half a million fleeing across borders. Countless others continue to suffer the impact of the violence. Riza underscored the importance of upholding international humanitarian law, stating that "civilians, humanitarian workers, journalists, and civilian infrastructure must never be targets of war." He emphasized that respect for humanitarian principles is vital for safeguarding lives. While the ceasefire brings a much-needed respite, the humanitarian situation remains dire. Riza pledged continued support for the Lebanese government and humanitarian partners to assist all affected populations, including the displaced, those in shelters, and residents in conflict-affected areas. "We are deeply grateful to donors for their generosity so far," he added, urging the international community to maintain and increase support to address the vast needs and aid recovery efforts. He also called for swift, safe, and unhindered access to affected areas to deliver life-saving assistance. "This tragic chapter highlights the immense challenges we face," Riza concluded, "but together, we can work toward meeting these needs and laying the groundwork for a stable future."
