Beirut: Member of Parliament, George Adwan, speaking on behalf of the 'Strong Republic' parliamentary bloc, on Wednesday described the bloc's meeting with Prime Minister-designate, Nawaf Salam, as "a constructive dialogue aimed at forming the government."
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Adwan emphasized the need to lay the foundation for a 'Third Republic'. He stated, "We want to establish a republic that upholds the principles of the constitution and the rule of law, distinct from the previous systems. Our primary demand, beyond quotas and shares, is for the government's action plan to be aligned with the presidential oath of office. We refuse any return to outdated formulas, including the 'Army, People, and Resistance' equation."
The lawmaker outlined the bloc's key priorities, stating that the government's program must reflect the presidential oath and ensure the full extension of state authority over all Lebanese territory. He highlighted the need to move past the era of national unity governments.
Adwan also called for decisive action on pressing issues. He demanded a resolute fight against corruption and insisted on the issuance of the indictment in the Beirut Port explosion case within the coming months. Furthermore, he stated that the bloc will not accept any plan that erases depositors' funds and advocated for fresh negotiations with the International Monetary Fund.
The Member of Parliament reaffirmed the bloc's support for the President and Prime Minister-designate in forming the first government of the new term, urging adherence to clear principles. "We aim to facilitate their efforts, but on the basis of fair representation of the Lebanese people. It is imperative to move away from consensus governments and towards a government that genuinely reflects the people's will," Adwan concluded.
