Beirut: The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Trk, concluded his visit to Lebanon with a press conference at the M¶venpick Hotel, highlighting signs of hope despite the nation's immense challenges.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Trk commended the recent political developments in Lebanon, particularly the election of a new President and Prime Minister, which he believes could pave the way for political stability and economic recovery. Trk emphasized the importance of implementing critical reforms to tackle socio-economic crises and inequalities, advocating for human rights as a governance tool.
Lebanon's active civil society was praised for championing freedom of expression, combatting discrimination, and promoting gender equality and inclusion for people with disabilities. Trk underscored the necessity of investing in the rule of law, recalling Lebanon's rich legal history and its potential to restore judicial independence and transparency. He offered his Office's support for the new leadership's reform commitments, particularly in justice and prison reform.
Trk reiterated his call for an independent investigation into the 2020 Beirut port explosion, stressing accountability for the tragedy that caused widespread devastation. He also highlighted the dire economic situation in Lebanon, with severe currency devaluation and inflation leading to significant poverty and hunger. According to the World Bank, 44% of the population lives below the poverty line, with 2.5 million people needing food assistance.
Public services, including healthcare and education, have suffered, eroding public confidence in the State. Trk called for renewing the social contract to restore confidence and provide a dignified future for the Lebanese people. The rights of the vulnerable must be central to economic policies, with prioritization of education, healthcare, and social protection.
Trk expressed deep concern over the consequences of Israeli military action in Lebanon, which resulted in significant civilian casualties and displacement. He emphasized the need for the ceasefire to transition into a durable peace, ensuring the safe return of civilians. The UN Human Rights Office stands ready to support Lebanon as it progresses toward stability and human rights protection.
