Cairo: President of the Republic, Joseph Aoun, currently in Cairo for the Arab Summit, on Tuesday met with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid, with whom he discussed regional and international situations, ahead of the summit's proceedings.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the Iraqi President congratulated President Aoun on his election as president of the Lebanese republic.
President Rashid affirmed Iraq's support for Lebanon in various sectors, emphasizing the longstanding bilateral relations between the two countries. He expressed Iraq's interest in continuing cooperation prospects across different fields. The discussion also covered the regional situation, particularly concerning Syria and Palestine, and the anticipated resolutions from the Arab Summit regarding these issues.
President Aoun expressed gratitude for Iraq's unwavering support for Lebanon across political, economic, oil, and humanitarian domains. He stressed the importance of Arab unity at this critical juncture to address various challenges. President Rashid extended an official invitation to President Aoun to visit Iraq, which was accepted.
The meeting included Lebanon's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Youssef Raji and Lebanon's Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ali Halabi. President Aoun also met with the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and the League's Assistant Secretary-General, Hossam Zaki, who updated him on the pre-summit deliberations and the draft statement. Lebanon's Foreign Minister Youssef Raji was present at this meeting as well.
