Beirut: President Joseph Aoun welcomed US Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria, Thomas Barrack, at Baabda Palace. The meeting, also attended by US Ambassador to Lebanon Lisa Johnson and other officials, focused on Lebanon's proposals for a comprehensive solution following Barrack's visit to Beirut last June.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Ambassador Barrack addressed reporters after the meeting, expressing satisfaction with the discussions. He noted the importance of the current period for Lebanon and the region, emphasizing the opportunities available to the Lebanese on a global scale. Barrack highlighted the commitment of the US President and Secretary Rubio to support Lebanon in achieving peace and prosperity.
Barrack responded to questions about Lebanon's position on Hezbollah's disarmament, acknowledging the balanced and thoughtful Lebanese response. He emphasized the need for continued dialogue and collaboration to reach a solution. Barrack expressed optimism about the potential for progress, citing the Lebanese government's exceptional response in a short timeframe.
When asked about differences between the American approach and the Lebanese response, Barrack mentioned the existence of 15 points addressing various issues. He acknowledged some differences but stressed the importance of diplomacy and international cooperation in resolving these matters. He also addressed questions about external intervention, emphasizing that Lebanon must address its own political challenges.
Barrack discussed the potential for easing tensions between Lebanon and Israel, expressing hope for mutual efforts to reduce hostilities and move towards peace. He conveyed US President Trump's belief in Lebanon's strategic importance in the region and urged Lebanese leaders to prioritize the country's interests.
