Zahrani: British Ambassador to Lebanon Hamish Cowell inaugurated the newly upgraded Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) training facility in Zahrani, South Lebanon. The facility, developed with support from the UK Government's Integrated Security Fund, is set to enhance the training and readiness of LAF troops for deployment across South Lebanon. Additionally, the UK is supplying 1,000 Personal Protection Equipment sets to ensure the safety of LAF soldiers during their critical operations.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the inauguration ceremony was attended by several key figures, including the Head of the Second Intervention Regiment, British Defence Attach© Lt. Col Charles Smith, Deputy Head of the UK ISF James Barber, and Head of Programme Sarah Kronfol. The UK's commitment to the LAF has been substantial, with over £17 million allocated since 2024 to support the expanded deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces. This initiative aims to reinforce their role as Lebanon's sole legitimate military force and bolster their resilience nationwide.
The new training facility is part of a broader UK effort to support the LAF, building upon over a decade of collaboration. Since 2013, the UK has partnered with the LAF's Land Border Regiments to enhance Lebanese state authority along the border with Syria, curb smuggling, and safeguard local communities.
Following the ceremony, Ambassador Cowell expressed his honor in inaugurating the upgraded facility, highlighting the partnership and shared vision for a safer Lebanon. He emphasized the importance of the LAF's role in protecting Lebanon and its citizens. The UK remains committed to supporting Lebanon's security and stability, standing in solidarity with the LAF and the nation they serve.
