Baabda: President of the Republic, Joseph Aoun, on Monday welcomed U.S. envoy Thomas Barrack at Baabda Palace, alongside Deputy U.S. Envoy for the Middle East Morgan Ortagus and U.S. Ambassador Lisa Johnson.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, President Aoun emphasized the importance of full commitment by all parties to the terms of the recently endorsed joint declaration. He also urged for enhanced international support for the Lebanese Army and the initiation of reconstruction in areas affected by Israeli aggression.
During the meeting, Barrack congratulated President Aoun on what he termed a 'historic achievement by the Lebanese government,' reflecting the officials' commitment to Lebanon's national interest. After the meeting, Barrack spoke to reporters about the significant progress and hopeful momentum, signaling potential breakthroughs in the coming weeks.
Barrack highlighted the progress as a step towards improving the lives of citizens and fostering a new dialogue framework. He confirmed that Morgan Ortagus had rejoined the team under President Donald Trump's directive, seeing this as a key moment to reshape the region's future.
On the subject of Israeli compliance, Barrack mentioned the necessity of engagement from the Israeli side and an economic roadmap for renewal. Addressing the disarmament of Hezbollah, he stated that the issue should not be seen as a pressure tactic but as a Lebanese decision requiring cooperation.
Barrack emphasized the collaborative nature of the efforts, stating that there are no threats and the focus is on creating viable alternatives. He praised the Lebanese government and its leadership, expressing optimism for Lebanon's future as a leading nation in the region.
