Beirut: UNIFIL has issued a pressing statement urging the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to cease any further military actions and withdraw completely from Lebanese territory. The statement follows recent strikes conducted by Israel in southern Lebanon, which UNIFIL argues are clear violations of Security Council resolution 1701 and threaten the fragile peace that has been maintained since November of the previous year.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, UNIFIL emphasized that these actions erode the confidence of civilians in the possibility of achieving a non-violent solution to the ongoing conflict. The peacekeeping force, together with the Lebanese Army, remains actively engaged on the ground to restore and maintain stability in southern Lebanon and along the Blue Line.
The recent strikes forced peacekeepers stationed in two positions in Deir Kifa, near Burj Qalawieh, to seek shelter for their safety. The attacks have endangered the lives of Lebanese soldiers, UN peacekeepers, and civilians. Consequently, UNIFIL has made a strong appeal to the IDF to halt further strikes and withdraw from Lebanese soil entirely.
In its statement, UNIFIL also called on all parties involved to avoid any further violations or actions that could escalate the situation. It emphasized the importance of upholding obligations under resolution 1701 and the Cessation of Hostilities understanding. These mechanisms are crucial for addressing concerns and preventing unilateral acts of violence. UNIFIL warned that continued escalation could jeopardize the significant progress made in restoring stability in the region.
