Qartaba: Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) leader, MP Gebran Bassil, in a speech delivered during a breakfast hosted in his honor in Qartaba on Sunday, considered that "the suspension of the Janna Dam is one of the injustices that have befallen Lebanon."
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Bassil explained that the study of this project has been underway since 1954, adding that it does not belong to his movement but rather a well-thought-out project that concerns Lebanon and irrigates the coast of Byblos and Metn, far-reaching Beirut. He highlighted that the Janna Dam could provide 100 million cubic meters of water and insisted that the Beirut Water Establishment could implement it without burdening the state treasury.
Bassil elaborated on the financial aspects, noting, "The cost of the dam is 255 million dollars, and a third of that amount was spent on it. This dam was the largest, and its value was not only in terms of water, but also in generating 100 megawatts of electricity at a cost of 45 million dollars for Jbeil." He lamented that the project was halted due to procrastination and completely stopped following the developments of October 17.
He accused political opponents of halting water projects and depriving the Lebanese of essential resources. Bassil criticized the opposition's stance on dams, asserting that they have realized the necessity of dams for securing water and are now seeking to complete these projects.
Bassil further attributed the issue to the political system and mindset, stating that political opponents focus on harming others rather than achieving progress. Before the breakfast, Bassil visited the Qartaba Municipality building, where he was welcomed by Mayor Fadi Martinos, who stressed the importance of understanding among Lebanese communities.
During his visit, Bassil expressed willingness to cooperate with others, citing the agreement within the municipality and union as proof. He acknowledged the legitimate fear surrounding upcoming elections and emphasized the need for awareness and responsibility, hoping to preserve Qartaba with collective efforts.
