Beirut: Minister of Justice, Adel Nassar, emphasized the critical nature of judicial independence, stressing the necessity of safeguarding judges from external pressures.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Nassar made these remarks during the Lebanese National Conference held at Saint Joseph University, in association with the French Institute of Sciences. The event, titled "The Judiciary: Between Independence, the Law, and the Path to the State," provided a platform for Nassar to underscore the importance of transparency for Lebanon's integration into the global financial system.
Nassar pointed out the significance of appointing judges free from political influence, highlighting that these judges are performing their duties with diligence. He remarked on the positive outcomes from recent meetings between Syrian and Lebanese delegations, indicating that Lebanon's adherence to transparency is essential for its connectivity with the global financial network. He further stressed the importance of transparency to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing, asserting that Lebanon's national interest aligns with global standards.
During the conference, Nassar also discussed the outcomes of meetings with a Syrian delegation, focusing on the extradition of fugitives and addressing issues related to political assassinations and disappearances. He specifically mentioned the request for the extradition of Habib Shartouni, expressing optimism about the progress of these investigations.
On the topic of Syrian detainees in Lebanon, Nassar noted a positive engagement between the two sides but cautioned that solutions should not compromise Lebanese interests. He also commented on the ongoing Beirut Port investigation, respecting judicial independence while ensuring that the Ministry of Justice supports the process.
Addressing internal security, Nassar emphasized the importance of weapon confiscation as a step toward state-building, a demand echoed in official statements and necessary for Lebanon's stability. He commended the Lebanese Army for its discreet yet effective efforts in this regard.
Finally, Nassar referenced a recent incident involving the lighting of the Raouche Rock, criticizing it as a breach of administrative law by Hezbollah. He affirmed that the judiciary's role is not to resolve political disputes but to adhere to legal frameworks, urging all parties, including Hezbollah, to engage constructively in state-building initiatives.
