Beirut: The Kataeb's Political Bureau convened its weekly meeting under the leadership of Party Leader Samy Gemayel to deliberate on the current political and security climate in Lebanon. Post-meeting, the Bureau released a statement outlining several key positions and concerns.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the Bureau reaffirmed the significance of adopting a constitutional amendment proposed by the Kataeb parliamentary bloc, alongside several MPs, to embed the principle of neutrality within Lebanon's Constitution. This amendment is viewed as a pivotal measure to uphold Lebanon's stability and protect it from regional conflicts, while maintaining the country's sovereign right to self-defense. The Bureau urged the President, Prime Minister, and all parliamentary blocs to back this initiative, establishing neutrality as a permanent cornerstone of Lebanon's national policy.
The Political Bureau also expressed apprehension regarding the delays in approving expatriate voting, suggesting it might be an attempt by the Amal-Hezbollah alliance to prevent Lebanese citizens abroad from engaging in the electoral process. The Bureau accused the Speaker of Parliament of exploiting his authority to hinder expatriate participation, violating parliamentary rules, the Constitution, and the principle of citizen equality. It warned that continued delays could suppress voter registration and diminish the influence of expatriate votes, urging Lebanese abroad to register without delay and engage actively in the democratic process.
Additionally, the Bureau condemned Hezbollah's recent actions to dominate State decisions by clinging to its weapons and not adhering to the negotiation framework sanctioned by Lebanon's top officials. It cautioned that such actions could inadvertently lead Lebanon into another avoidable conflict. The Bureau stressed the necessity for decisive State action on disarmament and negotiations, emphasizing that a minority should not dictate the majority's future.
Finally, the Bureau reiterated the State's sole authority to manage negotiations and define their parameters in alignment with Lebanon's national interest. It underscored the importance of Lebanon seizing opportunities to pursue stability, peace, and prosperity in the region, highlighting that successful negotiations hinge on the State's control over decision-making and its exclusive right to arms.
