New york: Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, condemned what he described as “unprovoked and deliberate aggression” by the United States and Israel following strikes on Iranian territory on Saturday. Speaking at an emergency session of the UN Security Council, Iravani stated that Washington and the Israeli occupation had carried out coordinated attacks on civilian-populated areas across Iran.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Iravani accused Washington of attempting to widen the confrontation using its regional military presence. He stated that “the United States, in turn, is deliberately seeking to expand the scope of the conflict by exploiting its bases in the Persian Gulf region.” Iravani further asserted that the US government’s actions were aimed at undermining Iran’s independence and sovereignty.
The Iranian envoy highlighted that statements by US and Israeli leaders calling for regime change in Iran constitute a direct violation of Iranian sovereignty
. He emphasized that the attacks do not meet the legal criteria for self-defense, adding that they are designed to interfere in Iran’s internal affairs.
In response to the aggression, Iravani indicated that Iran’s retaliation would target US government bases and facilities, hinting that Tehran’s focus would be on American military infrastructure. He urged the UN Security Council to formally recognize the actions of the United States and Israel as acts of aggression and to demand an immediate cessation of hostilities.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi communicated with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Security Council President James Kariuki, informing them of what he described as a “manifest act of aggression” by the United States and Israel against Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Araghchi characterized the attacks as a violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and an “open armed aggression” against Iran.
In invoking Article 51 of the UN Charter, Iran underscored its right to
self-defense, warning that its armed forces would utilize all necessary means to confront the aggression and deter further hostile acts. The letter also declared that all bases, facilities, and assets of hostile forces in the region would be considered legitimate military objectives in response to the aggression.
