Baabda: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, engaged in discussions with former Progressive Socialist Party Chief Walid Jumblatt and the current PSP leader, MP Taymour Jumblatt, at Baabda Palace today. The meeting focused on the evolving political landscape in Lebanon and regional issues.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Jumblatt addressed the media post-meeting, highlighting key points discussed with President Aoun. He emphasized the legitimacy of negotiations grounded in established principles, referencing the Armistice Agreement, the Taif Agreement, and international resolutions as foundational elements for any potential negotiations. He underscored the importance of negotiations in the international arena, while criticizing the use of Lebanon as a battleground and denouncing baseless accusations of treason against President Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
Jumblatt also raised concerns about the adequacy of shelter centers, advocating for more comprehensive measures. He acknowledged the efforts of authorities but stressed the need for ongoing vigilance given the unpredictable global conditions. He expressed his gratitude towards supportive communities, security services, and the army, while questioning the rationale behind criticisms of the military amidst current crises.
Addressing questions on Lebanon's negotiation stance versus Israeli reluctance, Jumblatt reiterated Lebanon's commitment to international agreements. He referenced past interactions, particularly during the 1982 Israeli invasion, expressing hope for rational dialogue with international figures, such as the American Ambassador to Lebanon.
When questioned on Israel's demand for Hezbollah's disarmament as a precondition for talks, Jumblatt rejected the notion of complying with Israeli demands, emphasizing Lebanon's focus on internal security, dialogue, and addressing the needs of the displaced. He suggested the use of prefabricated housing over tents to provide dignified temporary shelter, drawing parallels to historical refugee experiences.
In response to potential isolation post-conflict with Iran, Jumblatt questioned the rationale behind recent American actions against Iran, citing comments from the Omani Foreign Minister on the proximity to an agreement. He expressed concern over the impact of such actions on the Gulf region.
When asked about the readiness of armed groups among Druze sheikhs, Jumblatt denied any militarization, affirming reliance on state and security service protection.
Earlier in the day, President Aoun was briefed by Army Chief General Rodolphe Haykal on the security situation, particularly concerning Israel's escalation. The President called for heightened security measures across Lebanon, especially in Beirut, to ensure the safety of refuge shelters.
