Geagea Calls for Accountability in Lebanon: Urges National Unity and Action

Beirut: Lebanese Forces Party Leader, Samir Geagea, confirmed that "Lebanon is not Iran, and we must deal with reality objectively," warning that "the situation could deteriorate further, and what is already bad may become worse if not addressed."

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Geagea's comments were made during the opening of the "National Gathering" held in Maarab under the headline, "To Save Lebanon." The gathering called for the establishment of a special tribunal-national, international, or hybrid-to prosecute those responsible for dragging Lebanon into conflict and using its territory against the state's will. The tribunal aims to administer justice and establish a principle that no one is above accountability, and no weapon can shield responsibility.

Geagea emphasized that accountability is a moral and legal necessity to prevent future devastation. The gathering was attended by several Lebanese ministers, MPs, former officials, and a significant number of local and international journalists. Geagea expressed regret over the circumstances necessitating the gathering but acknowledged the current stage's critical nature.

Reflecting on history, Geagea recalled the disbandment of most militias between 1992 and 1994, with Hezbollah remaining under the guise of 'resistance.' He stressed ongoing efforts by Lebanese and national forces to avoid the current situation, mentioning past meetings and unheeded calls for the implementation of international resolutions.

Geagea highlighted the ideological problem linked to Iran, reiterating that Lebanon must address reality objectively. He warned of worsening conditions if not addressed and emphasized the Lebanese government's responsibility to implement its clear and bold decisions through judicial, security, and military channels.

Concluding the gathering, Geagea announced the formation of a committee to follow up on proceedings, including several MPs and a political researcher. The committee aims to ensure the implementation of the gathering's resolutions and maintain accountability in Lebanon.
