War Damage Impacts Over 18,500 Hectares of Farmland in Southern Lebanon

Beirut: The Ministry of Agriculture in Lebanon has reported that ongoing hostilities have caused damage to approximately 18,559 hectares of farmland in the southern region of the country. This area represents 22.5% of agricultural land within the conflict zones, as outlined in the latest national response report.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the report highlights that over 56,000 hectares have been affected overall, with damage in 64 towns in the southern region. This includes harm to irrigation networks, agricultural infrastructure, and food production facilities. Fruit trees, such as citrus, banana, and olive groves, have suffered significantly, with nearly 1.85 million livestock and poultry animals lost. Additionally, the report notes the destruction of more than 29,000 beehives and losses of around 2,030 tonnes of fish.

The ministry has also indicated that nearly 78% of farmers in the south have been displaced due to the ongoing conflict. It warns of increasing risks to food security in the region. Efforts are underway for emergency aid and recovery programs, which are being coordinated with international partners to address the crisis.
