AUB Higher Education Scholarships Program Celebrates Class of 2026

Beirut: The American University of Beirut (AUB) honored 93 graduates of its Higher Education Scholarships (HES) program at a graduation ceremony attended by students, families, mentors, university leaders, and representatives from the US Embassy in Lebanon.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the HES program is funded by the US government and aims to expand access to higher education for students from underserved and low-income backgrounds across Lebanon, including Lebanese nationals and refugees. Since its launch in 2011, the program has supported 891 scholars at AUB, providing opportunities for academic growth, leadership development, internships, research, and community engagement.

In her remarks, Dr. Samar Harkouss, director of the HES program and of the University Preparatory Program (UPP), addressed the graduates, emphasizing their courage, resilience, and hope. She highlighted the challenges faced by many students during their university years and noted the commitment of AUB and the students to achieve their dreams.

A video shown during the ceremony highlighted the experiences of HES scholars from various regions of Lebanon, including Beirut, Tripoli, Zahle, Baalbek, Saida, and Sour. Students shared their stories of overcoming financial hardship, striving for academic and professional goals, and contributing to their communities.

One of the graduates, Jamila Abo Latifa, shared her personal journey in medical laboratory sciences, emphasizing the determination to continue her education despite losing both parents. She recounted the significant moment of being accepted into the HES program, which reignited her dreams.

AUB President Fadlo Khuri praised the graduating class for their perseverance and achievement, framing it within the broader context of equity and access. He emphasized that the graduates represent a widening circle of opportunity for underserved regions and communities.

US Embassy Charg© d'Affaires Keith Hanigan highlighted the importance of education, describing it as an investment and a belief in opening doors to possibility. He encouraged the graduates to be the change and hope for Lebanon's future.

The ceremony included an instrumental performance by two HES scholars and an exhibition showcasing the scholars' success stories and community engagement initiatives, concluding with a dinner.
