Beirut: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, on Friday received at Baabda Palace, Patriarch of the Chaldean Church in Iraq and the World, Mar Paul III Nona, on the occasion of his first visit to Lebanon since his election as patriarch.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, President Aoun congratulated Patriarch Nona on his election and wished him success in his new ecclesiastical responsibilities. Patriarch Nona affirmed the Chaldean community's support for the efforts undertaken by President Aoun to ensure Lebanon's stability and security, and to protect its interests and the rights of its people. He emphasized that Lebanon is seen as a strategic depth and its stability affects the stability of the region.
Patriarch Nona briefed President Aoun on the condition of Christians in Iraq, referencing the call by the Iraqi Prime Minister for Christians who had fled due to violence to return. He noted that a stable environment is necessary for such a return.
President Aoun highlighted the role of Christians in the Middle East and the significance of Christian-Muslim coexistence, remarking that the departure of Christians due to conflicts resulted in the loss of moderation in the region. He reiterated the cooperation between Lebanon and Iraq, acknowledging the support provided by the Iraqi government during Lebanon's challenging times, particularly during the Israeli war.
The conversation also touched on the situation of the Chaldean community in Lebanon. President Aoun assured his commitment to their well-being and the fulfillment of their needs.
