UN Rapporteur Albanese Calls for International Protection Forces in West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza

Beirut: UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese called for the deployment of international protection forces in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, Russia Today reported. Writing on X, Albanese described such a move as "absolutely necessary" amid the continuing Israeli occupation and escalating violations against Palestinians.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Albanese stated that other states were obliged, under the International Court of Justice's July 2024 advisory opinion, to act to end what the court deemed Israel's unlawful occupation and not assist in its continuation. She emphasized the responsibility of the international community to intervene in order to uphold international law and protect human rights.

Albanese also questioned whether diplomatic efforts by the UN secretary-general and the General Assembly's "Uniting for Peace" mechanism could overcome the deadlock in the Security Council, where repeated US vetoes have prevented action on Gaza and the West Bank. She highlighted the urgent need for international intervention to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis and to ensure the safety and security of Palestinian civilians in the affected areas.
