Beirut: Druze Sheikh Akl Dr. Sami Abi Al-Mouna hosted US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa at the Druze Community headquarters in Verdun to discuss the ongoing political and security landscape in Lebanon and the broader region. The discussions were centered around the general situation in Lebanon, emphasizing the need for unity and international support.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Abi Al-Mouna underscored the Druze community's dedication to unity, dialogue, and coexistence. He urged the international community, particularly the United States, to assist Lebanon in its recovery efforts and to respect its sovereign rights. Abi Al-Mouna reiterated the Druze identity's roots in Arab and Islamic heritage, emphasizing the community's dedication to Lebanon's independence and sovereignty.
Abi Al-Mouna addressed the situation in Syria's Sweida, labeling the events there as "a premeditated bloody project." He cautioned against efforts to change the spiritual and national identity of the area and called for vigilance to prevent similar occurrences. On Lebanon, he emphasized that peace could not be achieved through violations of international resolutions or sovereignty, stating that Israel would only withdraw under pressure. He expressed hope that the United States would strengthen the Lebanese Army and security forces to ensure legitimate authority.
Following the meeting, Ambassador Issa described the discussions as highly constructive, focusing on Lebanon's future. When questioned about Hezbollah's weapons, Issa acknowledged a general consensus among Lebanese parties on the need for state authority, though opinions differed on achieving this goal. He stated that Hezbollah must relinquish its weapons, emphasizing that the state alone should hold authority.
Issa addressed claims regarding communication between President Joseph Aoun and Hezbollah, affirming that contacts continued, directly or indirectly. He noted that Iran-US developments were influencing discussions in Lebanon due to Hezbollah's ties to Iranian decisions. Issa clarified that Washington was not pursuing direct negotiations with Hezbollah, asserting that any dialogue should occur through the Lebanese state.
He emphasized that talks between Lebanon and Israel remained state-to-state, irrespective of Hezbollah's presence. Issa stated that the US was facilitating closer relations between Lebanon and Israel and raising concerns about Israeli strikes with Israel, pressing for their reduction. Additionally, Issa mentioned plans to meet former Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt soon.
Separately, Abi Al-Mouna met with a delegation including Displaced Ministry Director General Ahmad Mahmoud, Telecommunications Ministry Director General Bassel Al-Ayoubi, and Culture Ministry Director General Ali Al-Samad to discuss general affairs and their ministries' operations.
