Beirut: The Association of Automobile Importers (AIA), representing accredited automotive manufacturers in Lebanon, has made an urgent appeal to Lebanese authorities to enforce Article 348 of the Lebanese Traffic Law. This law prohibits the importation of unroadworthy vehicles, including those that have been damaged or involved in significant accidents, and half-cut vehicles. The AIA emphasizes that the importation of such vehicles poses risks to public safety and consumer rights.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, a notable number of vehicles imported into Lebanon have previously been involved in serious incidents like collisions or submersions. These circumstances render their importation illegal under the current traffic law. The AIA stresses the need for strict adherence to the provisions of the law, which mandate thorough inspections of all vehicles before they enter Lebanon.
The association highlights the importance of establishing private mechanical inspection centers at all sea and land entry points to ensure compliance with the law. Until such centers are operational, the AIA demands that importers provide both a vehicle registration certificate and a certificate from a mechanical inspection center in the country of export. This certificate must confirm the vehicle's roadworthiness and be dated no more than two months prior to the shipping date.
