Alida Torbay’s “Caminante” Exhibition at MACAM: An Artistic Exploration of Life’s Journey.

Alita: The multidisciplinary Lebanese-Venezuelan artist, Alida Torbay, is showcasing her exhibition "Caminante" at MACAM (Modern And Contemporary Art Museum) following its presentation at the Cervantes Institute of Beirut. Inspired by Antonio Machado's poem "Caminante," the exhibition reflects on the individual's journey through life, embracing the concept that our path is unveiled as we walk. According to National news agency - Lebanon, Alida Torbay draws inspiration from Machado's verse, "Caminante, no hay camino, se hace camino al andar" (Wayfarer, there is no path, the path is done by walking), to embark on an artistic exploration of existence. Her work draws from personal travels and encounters, inviting viewers to reflect on their own life journeys. Curated by Angelo Gioè, director of the Italian Institute of Culture in Beirut, "Caminante" features a dynamic blend of bronze and resin sculptures and installations symbolizing the essence of travel. At the exhibition's entrance, visitors are greeted by a sound installation of Machado's poem, recited in Arabic by actor Rifaat Torbey and in Spanish by Angelo Gioè. Resin sculptures depicting giant steps symbolize the individual's ongoing progress, while bronze statues in the hall represent themes like emigration, dreams, and identity. Noteworthy pieces include "The Wayfarer," a sculpture with a video element exploring identity, and two bridal figures symbolizing nature's decay and the struggle for freedom against modern challenges. According to Alida Torbay, the exhibition prompts contemplation on humanism in a world where the superhuman neglects spiritual and moral dimensions. "Caminante" transcends a simple art display, offering an artistic odyssey filled with emotions and experiences that have shaped the artist's life. Through sculptures, installations, and videos, Torbay invites introspection and reflection on one's life path. According to Angelo Gioè, the exhibition highlights the transformative power of walking: "Walking transforms us, walking makes us h uman, walking unties our knots, lubricates our thoughts, activates our organs, and makes us stronger." Universal themes such as identity, time, freedom, and the human condition resonate throughout "Caminante," urging viewers to consider their existence and values. The exhibition also featured a contemporary dance performance by the Beirut Physical Lab during its opening. Alida Torbay's diverse background informs her art, having transitioned from law to bioethics and philosophy studies, and later discovering her passion for sculpture in Venezuela. Her work delves into identity, freedom, and human condition themes, resulting in art that reflects deep contemplation and a commitment to beauty and truth. MACAM, located in Alita, Jbeil, is open by appointment from Friday to Sunday between 10 AM and 4 PM.
