Aoun and Al-Sudani Advocate for Stronger Arab Collaboration and Support for Lebanon

Baghdad: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, expressed gratitude to Iraq for its contributions to Lebanon across various fields during a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. Aoun's visit to the Government Palace in Baghdad underscored the importance of bolstering cooperation between Iraqi and Lebanese administrations, with a particular focus on military collaboration.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the Iraqi Prime Minister proposed establishing a joint committee for trade exchange and another for political and security coordination between the two countries. This initiative was met with support from President Aoun, highlighting the depth of relations between Iraq and Lebanon. Al-Sudani reiterated Iraq's readiness to assist Lebanon in all areas and strengthen bilateral ties.

In a joint press conference following their meeting, President Aoun emphasized the necessity of creating a system of mutual Arab interest based on expertise exchange and the development of common interests. He advocated for an institutionalized Arab system within bilateral and joint agreements to evolve into a common Arab market, facilitating cooperation in the movement of people, goods, and services.

Aoun drew inspiration from the words of Sayyid Ali al-Sistani, urging the establishment of scientific and practical plans for governance based on competence and integrity, while preventing foreign interference and combating corruption. He underscored the importance of these tenets for achieving security, stability, progress, and prosperity.

Iraqi Prime Minister al-Sudani highlighted the historic and distinguished relationship between Iraq and Lebanon. He expressed aspirations to enhance political, economic, and security relations to address regional challenges. Al-Sudani affirmed Iraq's commitment to supporting Lebanon's internal political consensus and the pursuit of non-interference in internal affairs.

The dialogue between the two leaders extended to shared opportunities in energy, communications, and trade fields, with an emphasis on comprehensive economic integration and private sector cooperation. Al-Sudani condemned repeated Israeli attacks on Lebanese sovereignty, urging full implementation of UN Resolution 1701 to support stability.

Al-Sudani confirmed Iraq's initial support of $20 million for Lebanon's reconstruction, emphasizing Iraq's readiness to activate and complete this process further. He committed to continuing efforts driven by Iraq's responsibilities, particularly as Iraq assumes the presidency of the Council of the League of Arab States.
