Beirut: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, highlighted the necessity of an Israeli withdrawal from five occupied hills to enable the full deployment of the Lebanese Army along the southern border. This move, he stated, is crucial for the Lebanese state to assume sole responsibility for border security.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, President Aoun assured a French Senate delegation that the Lebanese Army is already fully deployed along the northeastern border, actively engaging in combating terrorism, preventing smuggling, and maintaining internal security. He underscored that the decision to centralize weapon control under the Lebanese state has been finalized, marking a departure from past conflicts.
On the domestic front, Aoun pointed out that Lebanon has embarked on critical reforms, which are seen as essential for the nation rather than merely meeting external demands. He emphasized that fighting corruption is a central aspect of the reform process, aiming to enhance public service and order.
In addressing regional issues, President Aoun announced the formation of joint Lebanese-Syrian committees to tackle unresolved matters, such as border demarcation and the status of Syrian refugees residing in Lebanon for economic reasons.
Furthermore, Aoun confirmed the timely conduct of municipal elections, emphasizing the state's role in ensuring the security and administrative organization of these elections, while allowing the Lebanese people to choose their representatives freely.
