Baabda: President of the Republic, Joseph Aoun, on Friday welcomed Spanish Chief of Defense, Admiral Teodoro L³pez Calder³n, at Baabda Palace, in the presence of Spanish Ambassador to Lebanon Jesºs Santos Aguado and a delegation of senior Spanish officers, as part of Admiral Calder³n's visit to inspect the Spanish contingent operating under the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission in South Lebanon.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Admiral Calder³n briefed President Aoun on his observations from the southern tour, reaffirming Spain's ongoing support for the Lebanese Army and UNIFIL's mandate. He emphasized that Spain remains committed to contributing to security and stability in South Lebanon, noting that Spanish peacekeepers have been deployed there for 20 years, fostering 'deep and friendly ties with the local communities' despite challenging conditions.
President Aoun welcomed Admiral Calder³n, expressing gratitude for Spain's steadfast participation in UNIFIL and its readiness to continue assisting Lebanon in maintaining peace and stability in coordination with the Lebanese Army and other European forces.
He also commended the sacrifices of Spanish troops and their humanitarian contributions, recalling the 'unforgettable support' they provided to residents during repeated Israeli aggressions, including social, medical, and relief assistance.
The president further expressed his hope to pay an official visit to Spain in the coming months, conveying appreciation to King Felipe VI and the Spanish government for their continued solidarity and support for Lebanon.
