Aoun Welcomes Iran-U.S. Understanding, Reviews Waste Sector Reforms, and Receives MPs Massaad and Yassine


Baabda: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, on Monday welcomed the memorandum of understanding announced between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, particularly its provisions aimed at halting military operations and regional escalation, including in Lebanon.



According to National News Agency – Lebanon, in a statement issued from Baabda Palace, President Aoun expressed appreciation for the memorandum’s recognition of Lebanon’s particular circumstances and its acknowledgment that Lebanon’s security and stability are integral to any serious effort to establish lasting regional stability.



The President emphasized that the Lebanese people, especially those in areas affected by attacks, destruction, and displacement, anticipate these understandings being translated into practical measures to end the cycle of violence and pave the way for recovery, reconstruction, and sustainable stability.



Aoun also thanked all countries and parties involved in reaching the understanding and ensuring Lebanon’s inclusion in efforts aimed at ending military escalation across the region. He expressed hope that this development would initiate a broader process to strengthen regional stability, safeguard the sovereignty of states and the rights of their peoples, and enable the Lebanese to focus on reconstruction and restoring normal life under a secure and stable state.



Separately, President Aoun met with Environment Minister Dr. Tamara El Zein and Chairman of the National Solid Waste Management Authority Marwan Rizkallah to discuss Lebanon’s waste management sector. They reviewed the challenges it faces and the reform measures underway to strengthen governance and improve management of the file.



Discussions included efforts to activate the role of the National Solid Waste Management Authority, complete the necessary regulatory and financial frameworks for its work, and advance the implementation of the National Integrated Waste Management Strategy. The meeting addressed challenges related to landfill capacity, the development of sorting and treatment facilities, and the adoption of sustainable solutions aimed at increasing recycling rates and reducing reliance on landfilling.



The President also met MP Charbel Massaad, who emphasized the importance of rallying behind the state and supporting Aoun’s efforts to end the war, preserve civil peace, and reinforce stability, while conveying the concerns and development priorities of residents of the Jezzine district.



Aoun received MP Yassine Yassine, who urged all Lebanese to rise above political divisions and unite behind the state and its constitutional institutions. Yassine reaffirmed support for the diplomatic efforts and negotiations led by the Lebanese state to end the war and Israeli attacks, stressing that Lebanon’s true strength lies in its legitimate institutions.
