Beirut: Head of the General Confederation of Lebanese Workers, Bechara Asmar, on Tuesday announced his outright rejection of the taxes and fees imposed to finance salary increases for public sector employees, retirees, and military personnel.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Asmar emphasized that the government should have sought alternative funding sources rather than granting an increase that does not meet expectations and then immediately offsetting it through additional taxation. He warned that the new measures would burden workers and military personnel alike and negatively impact prices, goods, heating, and transportation.
Furthermore, Asmar called for an emergency meeting of the labor confederation to discuss steps to halt what he described as systematic harm to working classes. The urgency underlines the growing concerns among Lebanese workers about the government’s fiscal strategies and their long-term implications on the economy and social welfare.
