Beirut: The American University of Beirut (AUB)'s Good Governance and Citizenship Observatory (GGCO) at the Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ)'s Observatory on Public Service and Good Governance (OFP). This partnership, formalized on January 20, 2025, aims to advance governance practices, improve public service quality, empower youth, and foster active citizenship in Lebanon.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the MoU signing ceremony took place at AUB and was attended by notable figures from both universities, including AUB president Dr. Fadlo Khuri, USJ Rector Professor Salim Daccache, and several senior academics and administrators. Dr. Khuri emphasized the universities' responsibility toward Lebanon's well-being, expressing hope that the partnership will contribute positively to the nation.
Professor Salim Daccache highlighted the collaborative efforts of the universities in recent years, focusing on citizenship and reform in Lebanon. He noted that despite regional challenges, the intellectual environment cultivated by both institutions has significantly impacted the youth and academic communities.
The MoU, valid for three years, establishes a framework for enhancing governance practices, promoting ethical standards, and encouraging public involvement. It aims to develop future leaders by advocating for youth participation and equipping them with tools for effective policy advocacy. The collaboration also seeks to contribute to both academic literature and practical applications.
Dr. Simon Kachar, director of GGCO at AUB, remarked on the significance of the partnership, emphasizing the necessity of good governance, active citizenship, and public reform for Lebanon's future. Professor Pascal Monin, Director of OFP at USJ, described the partnership as a strategic alliance built on shared values, aiming to accelerate state rebuilding initiatives and empower future generations.
This alliance will focus on promoting sustainable societal development through various activities, including educational programs, workshops, community events, policy roundtables, and research initiatives. Funding efforts will be pursued to ensure the continued impact of these collaborative projects.
