AUB President Fadlo R. Khuri Joins Esteemed American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Beirut: Chairman of the American University of Beirut (AUB) Board of Trustees Abdo G. Kadifa announced that Dr. Fadlo R. Khuri, the president of AUB, has been elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in the category of Educational and Academic Leadership. Dr. Khuri's election took place on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. Kadifa expressed that Dr. Khuri joins a distinguished group of leaders recognized for their contributions to education, policy, and leadership.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Dr. Khuri expressed his pride in being nominated by Board Chair Emeritus Philip S. Khoury, acknowledging the collective efforts at AUB over the past decade. He highlighted the academy's historical significance, mentioning its founding in 1780 by notable figures such as John Adams and John Hancock. Dr. Khuri noted the honor of being elected alongside prominent individuals, including Gloria Steinem.

Reflecting on Dr. Khuri's influence at AUB, Kadifa acknowledged his transformative leadership since 2015. Under Dr. Khuri's tenure, AUB has faced challenges such as economic crises, the Beirut explosion in 2020, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, AUB achieved significant milestones, including the reintroduction of academic tenure, the establishment of AUB Online, and the launch of AUB Mediterraneo, its first twin campus outside Lebanon. Dr. Khuri's leadership has enhanced AUB's global reputation, resulting in a significant rise in international rankings.

Kadifa emphasized the honor's broader significance, noting the academy's history of honoring excellence and uniting leaders from various fields to address critical issues. He stated that Dr. Khuri's election is a testament to his commitment to academic excellence and innovative leadership.

American Academy of Arts and Sciences President Laurie L. Patton commented on the new class, acknowledging their accomplishments as a testament to human capacity for discovery, creativity, leadership, and persistence. She invited new members to join the academy's work in promoting the common good.
