Beirut: Caretaker Information Minister, Ziad Makary, on Monday welcomed Belgium's new Ambassador to Lebanon, Arnout Pauwels, who has been in Lebanon for three months. Ambassador Pauwels emphasized the "historical strength" of Lebanese-Belgian relations, affirming Belgium's commitment to supporting Lebanon through "these exceedingly challenging times." According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Pauwels stated Belgium's clear stance on the importance of respecting international human rights by all parties. He condemned Israel's firing on UNIFIL and continues to advocate for an immediate ceasefire. Pauwels highlighted the ongoing humanitarian aid delivery, stressing the importance of efficient distribution to ensure the assistance reaches shelter centers promptly. Pauwels expressed admiration for Lebanon's resilience in managing 'a sudden influx of a million displaced people within hours and days.' He cautioned that the onset of rains would exacerbate the situation. On Lebanon's internal politics, Pauwels st ressed the necessity for reforms, including electing a new president, acknowledging that such changes depend on both Lebanese citizens and leaders, and indicating Belgium's close monitoring of these developments.
