Beirut: National Defense Minister Michel Menassa marked Lebanon's Army Day by praising the armed forces' role in defending the country's sovereignty, describing the military as the cornerstone of national unity during one of Lebanon's most difficult periods.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Menassa issued a statement on the occasion, emphasizing that August 1 is "not just another date on the calendar," but a day that symbolizes "sacrifice, pride, and national identity." He highlighted that this year's commemoration arrives as Lebanon faces severe challenges, with its army undergoing "the test of sovereignty" and maintaining the principle that only the state should bear legitimate arms.
Menassa paid tribute to soldiers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, sacrificing themselves to preserve Lebanon's dignity and secure a better future for its citizens, ensuring that Lebanon remains "a beacon on a mountain, an oasis in the desert, a rose among thorns, a sword against enemies, and a spear in the eye of evil."
The Defense Minister expressed that the Lebanese people look to the army with pride, confidence, and hope, commending its personnel for executing their duties with courage and without seeking recognition. He acknowledged the limited support the military has received despite the heavy demands placed upon it, considering the greatest reward to be the gratitude and respect of the Lebanese people.
Menassa stressed that for the past 81 years, the Lebanese Army has been the foundation of the state, protecting the country's unity and stability through successive crises. Addressing the military institution, he said, "When the flood of war surged, you were the unbreakable dam; when the stones of the house crumbled, you were the solid rock."
Concluding his message, Menassa noted that Lebanon now stands "in the eye of the storm" amid regional turmoil and decades of hardship. He praised the army for honoring its commitments towards the nation, asserting, "You are the Army of Lebanon. Your stature is like the Cedar-rising above all."
