Beirut: Dr. Chaouki T. Abdallah, a respected researcher and educator, has commenced his role as the 10th president of the Lebanese American University (LAU). Upon his arrival in Lebanon this month, Dr. Abdallah affirmed his belief in the Lebanese people's enduring values, which he believes will guide the country through its current challenges. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Dr. Abdallah previously served as Executive Vice President for Research at Georgia Institute of Technology, where he oversaw significant research funding growth. Additionally, during his tenure as President of the University of New Mexico, he facilitated notable increases in student enrollment and graduation rates. Dr. Abdallah is recognized as an authority in systems theory and engineering, with an extensive publication record, including eight books and over 400 peer-reviewed articles. Philip Stoltzfus, Chairman of the LAU Board of Trustees, commended Dr. Abdallah's distinguished leadership record, emphasizing his capacity to advance LAU as it transitions into its second century. Stoltzfus highlighted Dr. Abdallah's accomplishments in establishing a comprehensive research and entrepreneurship program and his extensive international connections. Dr. Abdallah expressed his honor in leading LAU, reflecting on his upbringing in Lebanon and the educational opportunities that prepared him for advanced studies in the US. He expressed gratitude for the chance to contribute to LAU's mission and objectives at this pivotal time. Before his arrival in Lebanon, Dr. Abdallah began his presidential duties by attending significant meetings, including the LAU Board of Trustees at the New York campus and the Association of Arab Researchers organized by Qatar Foundation. His presentation focused on the contribution of Arab researchers to post-conflict recovery and rebuilding. Despite the ongoing crisis in Lebanon, LAU has continued its educational mission, adapting to hybrid learning models and enhancing digital capabilities. The university ha s also increased its financial aid budget to support students facing financial difficulties. LAU remains actively involved in nationwide relief efforts, deploying mobile clinics to serve displaced populations and providing essential support to faculty and staff affected by the crisis. With over 9,000 students across its campuses, LAU is committed to educating leaders dedicated to service and boasts an integrated health system with two academic hospitals, aiming for continued growth and development.
