Beirut: Economy and Trade Minister Amer Bisat chaired a crucial meeting at his ministry today, addressing the nation's concerns regarding the availability of food and basic commodities amidst heightened regional tensions prompting citizens to stockpile essentials.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the meeting included notable figures such as the Economy Ministry's Director General Mohamad Abou Haidar and heads of critical trade bodies, including the Supermarket Owners Syndicate, Food Importers Syndicate, and the Fuel Importing Companies Association, among others. Minister Bisat reassured citizens that the ministry is closely monitoring the situation and that there is no need for panic, as current supplies are adequate. He emphasized ongoing communication to maintain the normal operation of supply chains.
Minister Bisat provided specific updates on key commodities, noting that Lebanon's flour reserves are sufficient for over two months, with two ships carrying 25,000 tons of wheat expected soon. He assured that bakeries have enough flour for a week, with continued coordination with mills to address any immediate needs. Additionally, he highlighted that supermarkets have stocks to last up to four weeks, complemented by importers' reserves ready for the upcoming Ramadan.
On the fuel front, the Minister confirmed that Lebanon has a two-week fuel reserve, with incoming shipments expected to stabilize the supply further. He addressed concerns over temporary shortages at gas stations due to high demand, assuring that the situation is under control with around 3,500 stations across regions and pledged intensified deliveries from fuel importers.
Minister Bisat also underscored the importance of preventing price manipulation and monopolization, indicating that the Economy Ministry will collaborate closely with state security and judicial entities to enforce regulations. He stressed the ministry's commitment to ensuring the availability of essential goods through a responsible partnership between public and private sectors, leveraging the Consumer Protection Law to tackle any violations promptly and decisively.
