Beirut: The Embassy of Mexico in Lebanon proudly hosted the 1st Mexico-Lebanon Padel Tournament on October 4th and 5th at COURTS Lebanon fields in Tabarja and Bauchrieh; a dynamic and festive event that brought together participants of all ages and nationalities in a spirit of sportsmanship, cultural exchange, and community. The tournament formed part of the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Lebanon, highlighting the enduring friendship and shared values that unite both nations.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, padel, a sport that originated in Mexico in the 1960s, was created by entrepreneur Enrique Corcuera in Acapulco. By modifying a traditional tennis court into a smaller, enclosed playing area, Corcuera laid the foundation for what has become one of the fastest-growing racket sports in the world.
Over the course of the two-day tournament, teams competed across various categories, culminating on Sunday, October 5, with the exciting finals that drew a large and enthusiastic crowd. The event featured traditional Mexican cuisine, live mariachi music, and vibrant cultural celebrations, transforming the tournament into a memorable gathering for the entire community.
In the Men's Category C+D, first place was awarded to Imad Sfeir and Joseph Attieh, who received two round-trip tickets to Mexico along with a cash prize. In the Women's Intermediate Category, the winners were Serena Khoury and Lynn Matta, who secured first place after a competitive series of matches.
Throughout the event, the Ambassador of Mexico to Lebanon, Francisco Romero Bock, delivered a heartfelt speech emphasizing the importance of cultural exchange, the friendship between nations, and the joy that comes from uniting communities through sport. He underscored how events like this strengthen the growing bonds between the Mexican and Lebanese peoples.
