Dubai: The Digital School, a pioneering initiative by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives Foundation, recently celebrated the significant milestone of collecting over 50,000 electronic devices through its "Donate Your Own Device" campaign. This achievement was recognized at an event honoring key contributors, aligning with World E-Waste Day and supporting the UAE's Year of Sustainability. According to Emirates News Agency, the campaign, in partnership with the Emirates Red Crescent under the "Donate to Educate" theme, has seen substantial support from both governmental and private sectors. Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, highlighted the initiative's alignment with national sustainability goals and its key role in providing educational resources to underprivileged students globally. The event, attended by prominent figures such as Dr. Hamdan Al Mazrouei, Chairman of the Emirates Red Crescent, and Saeed A l Eter, Assistant Secretary-General of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, recognized major contributors like Dubai Police, which received the Digital School Sustainability Badge Flag for its substantial donations. The collected devices, totaling 120 tonnes, were either refurbished for use or responsibly recycled, emphasizing the campaign's dual focus on environmental sustainability and educational accessibility. This initiative has not only prevented significant e-waste but also reduced carbon emissions and saved resources, further supporting the UAE's environmental goals. Omar Sultan Al Olama stressed the importance of such initiatives in bridging the digital divide and providing future-ready educational solutions to students in remote and underprivileged areas. Dr. Al Mazrouei echoed these sentiments, noting that the Digital School represents a significant advancement in online education, reaching students in 14 countries including regions with limited educational infrastructure like r efugee camps. The "Donate Your Own Device" campaign has extended its impact by supporting the circular economy in the UAE, turning electronic waste into valuable educational resources and reducing the need for new resource extraction. This approach not only addresses the digital divide but also enhances the sustainability of educational tools provided to students. The campaign continues with its second phase, inviting further contributions of devices and financial donations to expand its reach and impact. With over 100 institutions involved, the initiative sets a precedent for community partnership and underscores the UAE's commitment to sustainable development and global education.
